Dale Steyn underwent a successful shoulder surgery on Thursday in Cape Town to repair the fracture he suffered during the first Test against Australia in Perth, Cricket South Africa said in a release. The fast bowler will have to undergo a six-month rehabilitation before gradually returning to bowling.Steyn suffered the injury on the second day in Perth and told Channel Nine that he felt a thud in his shoulder and a lot of pain while bowling. He had bowled only 12.4 overs in the match, and had dismissed David Warner before walking off the field.I felt this pop or like a thud in my shoulder. There was a lot of pain, Steyn said. I had to go off the field and have an MRI. I did something very similar against England in December in a similar area but it wasnt as bad. That was a stress reaction, which is like a very hairline little crack. This time its more like a fracture. Its kind of broken the whole bone.Dr Mohammed Moosajee, South Africas team manager, said Steyn would begin his rehabilitation programme after a few weeks, once the bone had healed.Dale had successful surgery on Thursday where the fracture in the right shoulder blade was fixated with the placement of a screw, Moosajee was quoted as saying in a press release. We expect a minimum six-month rehabilitation period before he can start any form of bowling. It is crucial to give the injury enough time to heal and to make sure that he is completely pain-free before he starts bowling again. He will begin with his rehabilitation programme once the satisfactory bony healing has taken place; this is expected to be in a few weeks. We are positive that he will make a successful return to international cricket. He will be provided with the best possible support and guidance led by our physiotherapist, Brandon Jackson, and Cricket South Africas medical committee, which will give him the best opportunity to make a successful return to full fitness.Steyn had suffered a similar injury late last year, and broke down during the Boxing Day Test against England. He was subsequently ruled out of the remaining matches of that series.Steyn made a comeback from that injury at the World T20 in March, featuring in two of South Africas four matches. He was then left out of the Caribbean triangular series in June - officially rested but unofficially dropped - and was allowed to play in the NatWest T20 Blast to regain form. He returned for South Africas Tests against New Zealand and seemed back to his best with eight wickets in the Centurion win. He also played in four of the five ODIs against Australia and was occasionally seen holding the shoulder but did not need treatment at any stage. The Montreal Canadiens announced on Friday that the veteran forward will return to the teams line-up on Saturday night when the Habs visit the Nashville Predators. Geelong coach Chris Scott has never had so many selection headaches at the pointy end of an AFL season. The post-season bye means he has another week to mull the 22 players he will pick for next Fridays MCG qualifying final against Hawthorn. As Scott pointed out on Wednesday its not going to make it any easier, with the potential returns of Scott Selwood and Lachie Henderson headlining the big calls he must make. The off-season arrival of Selwood, Henderson, Patrick Dangerfield and Zac Smith has significantly boosted the clubs depth.Coupled with the return to fitness of a few long-term injury concerns, including Daniel Menzel, it means competition for places has never been so fierce. The big difference (compared to the past five seasons) ... is we dont have a big group of long-term injured players, Scott said. Our footy club has persisted with guys that have missed a hell of a lot of footy, who are now available for the most part playing really well. Its a challenge for the guys just outside the 22 at the moment but theyve performed well at VFL level and get another chance to put their case forward this week in a VFL final. The ins to our team are pretty easy but the outs are much harder ... its a good problem to have.Selwood is expected to return from a tight hamstring against the Hawks but Henderson will be racing the clock as he bids too prove his fitness.ddddddddddddSelwood missed the Cats final game of the regular season, while Henderson underwent knee surgery last week and was also sidelined for the 111-point win over Melbourne.Well have a much better indication (of Hendersons chances of facing Hawthorn) when we train next week, Scott said. The early signs are positive. Our initial outlook was that we were confident he would play some finals footy this year.If he doesnt quite come up for the next game, were very confident hell be available for the next one.Scott and the clubs medical staff could wait until next Friday night before making a final call on Henderson. Its possible. Were not ruling anything out, he said.So much depends on how he goes when he actually starts testing it out.The Cats lost just five games in the regular season, with all their recruits firing at different stages. The addition of Brownlow medal favourite Dangerfield to their engine room has made life a lot more fun for captain Joel Selwood. We said at the start of the year theres a lot of unknowns with whats going to happen, Selwood said.We actually didnt know how the guys were going to fit into the football club. But theyve managed so far to play some good footy.
