SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- On Monday afternoon, San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly confirmed what likely didnt come as much of a surprise: Colin Kaepernick will remain the starting quarterback for the game Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After the 45-16 loss Sunday to the Buffalo Bills, Kelly said he thought Kaepernick played OK but that there were things Kaepernick can continue to develop. Asked whether Kaepernick, who started for the first time since Week 8 of last year, would get a second start this week, Kelly said Yeah, well see.The coach didnt take long to come to a conclusion, announcing at his Monday news conference that Kaepernick will get another opportunity against the Bucs.Colin will be our quarterback against Tampa Bay, Kelly said. I think theres some things that he did on Sunday that he can build upon. For his first extended playing time since last year, I thought there were some real positives there that I think we can try to build with him and get him going. It gives us the best chance against Tampa Bay this week.Kelly gave Kaepernick his first start last week after five weeks with Blaine Gabbert as the starter. The Niners won the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams but have lost five straight since. In his first start since returning from knee, shoulder and thumb surgeries, Kaepernick posted numbers similar to Gabberts and had a few costly misfires to open receivers down the field. He finished 13-of-29 for 187 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 66 yards on eight carries with no turnovers.I think he kept a lot of plays alive, Kelly said. Sometimes the protection broke down but he kept some plays alive from that standpoint. He did a good job keeping the ball out of harms way, didnt throw any interceptions, didnt seem like there were (any) balls where you were like Geez, that was a close one. Sometimes you can have a game you didnt throw any interceptions but you should have and the defense just dropped them. But I thought he did a good job protecting the football for us. Again, I think he had 66 yards rushing, gave us some opportunities there in the run game so going forward trying to build upon what he did this past week.Sunday against Tampa Bay, Kaepernick will be making his first start at Levis Stadium since Oct. 22, 2015, though he did make a cameo appearance in the season opener, handing off three times at the end of the win against the Rams. When the Niners last played at home against Arizona on Oct. 6, fans chanted, We want Kap, we want Kap in hopes that Kelly would make the change during that 33-21 defeat.Kaepernick, who has drawn the ire of some for his protest of racial oppression and inequality, figures to get a warmer welcome at home than he did in Buffalo, where he was greeted by a loud chorus of boos as the offense first stepped on the field and fans chanted USA, USA at him just before he knelt during the playing of the national anthem. After starting against the Bills, Kaepernick said the decision on whether hed get another start isnt up to him but hell try to make the most of any opportunity he gets.I went out, I played as hard as I could, gave this team everything I had and Ill continue to do that every week they let me, Kaepernick said.Kevin Gausman Jersey . On Oct. 1 and 2, spectators will be able to access a special broadcast intended for virtual reality on smartphones or VR headsets.By utilizing the program feed and a third-party application, viewers will be able to watch the live stream while also accessing a third-person, gods eye view of the map. Theyll be able to look around and peer at different avenues and lines of sight, which means seeing competitive CS:GO from a whole new angle. Its great, because you get the best of both worlds, the first-person and third-person, said Mitch Liu, CEO of Sliver.TV. [In] the higher-up view for strategy, you can see how the team comes together, or how a teammate comes around the corner and who covers his back. The nature of virtual reality in esports has become a hot topic, especially since The International 6, where Valve premiered both VR and AR (augmented reality), features for viewers of its competitive Dota 2 games. All matches at TI6 were available to spectate in VR, from both an overhead and on-the-ground view. Heroes were also displayed on the program feed in real-time using AR technology, allowing the production crew to display hero picks and compositions in new ways.Paul RedEye Chaloner, who hosted TI6 in Seattle this year, said he has been blown away by what Valve has shown him in VR but is still skeptical about its use in broadcasts.I think its very novel right now. I dont think weve necessarily figured out how to use it best yet, Chaloner said. I think, like all new technologies, its very cool right now. Its great to show off and show people what it can do. I dont think weve necessarily nailed how it fits into a broadcast properly, for the benefiit of the viewer, and likewise as a spectator in the game.ddddddddddddSliver.TVs solution seems to work similar to Valves in offering a mixed-view solution; one way to watch the events that is native and familiar, and a second option that breaks the conventions of current esports broadcasts. Liu told us Sliver.TV wants ESL One New York to be a tipping point for VR, and the company is already looking into contacting other tournament organizers to offer VR solutions. We have an opportunity to transform the esports spectator experience, Liu said. We believe that we can really take the esports live event to a whole new level. For Chaloner and others on the production and broadcasting side, the issue is not introduction, but integration. The difficulty is finding a happy medium between drawing too much attention to something and ignoring it. Like lower-third screen overlays, statistics and motion graphics, virtual reality can be a powerful storytelling tool -- in the right hands and with the right approach. Its more about [the question] Does it add to the broadcast experience for the viewer? Chaloner said. Does it add something that they [couldnt] get out of another event, and therefore would then crave at big events [in the future]? [In other words,] would it become expected that you would have this technology at every event?ESL One New York will be a proving ground for both Sliver.TV and virtual reality for spectatorship at competitive events. The experience, which will be available through Slivers application on the Google and Apple app stores on multiple devices, will be one step forward in the ongoing experiment of integrating virtual reality into modern broadcasts.
