LOS ANGELES -- Ronda Rousey is constructing her escape hatch out of mixed martial arts, even if shes not planning to use it just yet. The UFC bantamweight champion has turned her celebrity and charisma into a budding career as an action film star. Many MMA fighters dream about it, but Rousey is actually doing it: With upcoming parts in "The Expendables 3," the newest "Fast and Furious" chapter and the "Entourage" movie, shes seeking success outside the cage even while her fighting career is near its peak. Rousey has little down time between Bulgarian film sets and endless training back home in Los Angeles, but she isnt looking to relax while her window of opportunity is open. "Theres really not much of a model for this," Rousey said. "Im making it up as I go along, and I think were really starting to find a groove and a way for it to work without me falling asleep in traffic again. Thats not good." When Rousey (9-0) makes her fourth title defence against Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on Saturday, she isnt the main event in the biggest show of the summer. Rousey honestly prefers sharing the bill at big events, this time with middleweight champion Chris Weidmans title defence against Lyoto Machida. On the big screen, Rousey wont always be satisfied with occasional supporting roles. She wants to be a star, preferably in a series of action adventures that could keep her occupied well after her MMA career ends. "One of my goals with the whole movie thing is I want to just be able to have my own franchise, and I feel like thats something that doesnt happen overnight," Rousey said. "Thats something you have to put a lot of thought into. Yeah, it would probably be extremely difficult for me to play Queen Elizabeth in some film, but I feel like a franchise is a great fit for me, because then I could find something that just fits me being myself. And then I would just have to continue to be myself, and I know Im good at that." For all of Rouseys outside interests and attention, her last two months have been focused on Davis (16-5), a Canadian expert in jiu-jitsu with a five-fight winning streak. Rousey is an enormous favourite, but she has yet to take an opponent lightly in the sport she took up professionally just over three years ago. "My sister is getting married, and the whole day Im going to be thinking about beating Alexis," Rousey said. "Anything that comes up that should make me super-excited, I really do not have the capacity to enjoy until I beat Alexis." Rousey made back-to-back films in 2013, but her bout with Davis is her third fight in just over six months. She has enjoyed the chance to get into a training groove after learning that ring rust is real when she returned in December from that 10-month absence and mildly struggled to finish off Miesha Tate. But Rousey showed a tough chin in that bout, and her tight schedule has kept her focused on improving the weaker aspects of her game. Rouseys Olympic-caliber judo skills and signature armbar submission hold are still vicious, yet her coaches are impressed by her improvements in striking. In the future, Rousey would prefer to fight twice per year, devoting the rest of her time to a film career. She also still dreams of a fight against Gina Carano, another rising actor whose MMA career inspired Rousey to step into the cage. But unlike Carano, Rousey insists she isnt leaving MMA in the foreseeable future, flatly laughing at any suggestion she cant pursue both careers. After UFC 175, shell begin promoting "The Expendables 3" for its Aug. 15 release, but shell likely fight again this year. "The UFC, theyve been good to me," Rousey said. "They took a lot of risks for me, and the way I show my appreciation is I take risks for them, and Im there when they need me. They know that if something falls out, they can call me on 24 hours notice and expect me to show up, be the Fight of the Night, perform and win and get out of there. And I know that they cant say that for a lot of their fighters." Manning shouldnt be nearly as drained or distracted when the Colts visit Denver this weekend. Watch the game live on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5 and TSN GO, tonight at 7pm et/4pm pt. Jim Irsay isnt getting under his skin with talk about how disappointed he was to win just one ring with Manning. And the five-time MVP doesnt have to trouble himself with a pregame tribute -- or Robert Mathis, for that matter. "Well, I think it was different last year going back to Indianapolis," Manning said coolly. In speaking with reporters in both Denver and Indianapolis during the week, Manning didnt elaborate on what it will be like facing his old team again. Instead, he segued right into what an honour it is to play in prime time. "They dont pick bad teams to open up NBC Sunday Night Football, " Manning said. "Theyre not paying all that money to the NFL to put bad teams on." No, but they did pick two teams that are dealing with lots of drama. Injuries have turned the Colts O-line into a turnstile. Indy is without Mathis, the leagues sacks leader last year with 19 1-2, including two of Manning. Mathis was suspended for the first four games for violating the leagues performance enhancing drug policy. "Hes in my opinion the best pass rusher in the NFL, and on top of that, a great leader, great teammate, great person," Andrew Luck said. The Broncos have two prominent players serving four-game banishments: receiver Wes Welker and Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater, who combined to score 210 points last season. Prater violated the NFLs substance abuse policy by drinking alcohol in the off-season, forbidden since his 2011 DUI arrest, and Welker reportedly tested positive for amphetamine use in violation of the leagues rules forbidding performance-enhancing drugs. Welker has been the games top slot receiver for a decade and Prater was the leagues top kicker last year when he made all but one of his 26 field goal attempts, including a record-breaking 64-yarder. He also led the league by a wide margin with 81 touchbacks. Novice Brandon McManus replaces Prater and the Broncos will likely make up for Welkers absence with a healthy dose of speedy receiver Emmanuel Sanders and backup tight end Jacob Tamme, who restructured his contract Thursday, in the slot. Demaryius Thomas and Cody Latimer can also move inside, with Bubba Caldwell running sideline routes. "Of course were going to miss him," Sanders said. "Hes Wes Welker." If any team is built to weather a loss such as Welkers, however, its the Broncos. "Weve got great respect for Wes," Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. "But theyve got enough weapons for Peyton." Keep an eye on these other subplots Sunday night: SNAP DECISONS: If Khaled Holmes isnt ready, A.Q. Shipley could start against Denver a week after the Colts claimed the centre off waivers from Baltimore. Holmes returned to practice Wednesday for the first tiime since spraining his left ankle in the preseason opener.ddddddddddddBackup Jonotthan Harrison also practiced after missing all of last week with a right thumb injury. Left guard Jack Mewhort, promoted to starter when Donald Thomas tore his right quadriceps in training camp, has been dealing with a sore right knee. And two of the Colts most versatile backups, Xavier Nixon (knee) and Joe Reitz (ankle), also are hurt. "It does keep happening like a horror movie almost," Luck said. GETTING DEFENSIVE: After coming up one win short last season, Broncos GM John Elway spent more than $100 million on a defensive makeover that includes free agents DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib. Plus, Von Miller, Derek Wolfe, Chris Harris Jr., Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter have returned from injuries that sidelined them at the Super Bowl. "Despite all our offensive productivity and how special our offence is, this town loves our team to play great defence," said co-ordinator Jack Del Rio. "And I look forward to us bringing back some of that Orange Crush feel." Even if they create their own identity on defence, theyll always ride shotgun to Manning, suggested nose tackle Terrance Knighton. "With his resume, it really doesnt matter how good you are on defence," Knighton said. "Its always going to be about Peyton and that offence putting up NFL records on points and yards. We just want to get off the field, get a rhythm going and feed off of them." GETTING DEFENSIVE II: In Miller and Ware, the Broncos have one of the games premier pass-rushing duos. Ware was cut in a salary cap move by the Dallas Cowboys, where he was the franchise leader in sacks. Hes teaming up with Miller, whos coming off a trying year that began with a six-game drug suspension and ended with a torn ACL. Ware is also coming back from an injury-riddled season. Like Miller, he looks primed for a big year. "He doesnt look like a man that should have been cut," Colts tight end Dwayne Allen said. "... Hes playing at an incredibly high level: very active hands, very active feet, destroys tight ends." GETTING DEFENSIVE III: The Broncos are smarting over the timing of Welkers suspension, which came down Tuesday night after the Broncos had drawn up their blueprints for the Colts. "Im sure not sure they really care what I think, but sure, I would like to know maybe before we pick our roster," coach John Fox said. "Look, were disappointed in Wes and we respect the leagues ruling on suspensions. It happens to a lot of people. But I would have liked a little different kind of timing, but ... were moving on." GROUND GAMES: Both teams seek better balance on offence. Second-year bruiser Montee Ball leads a group of running backs in Denver thats never started an NFL game, and the Colts are counting on Trent Richardson to have a bounce-back year. "I think people are really going to enjoy watching him," Luck said. "I think he feels a lot more comfortable with everything." ' ' '
