RIO DE JANEIRO -- It took a moment for Helen Maroulis accomplishment to sink in.The American defeated Japans Saori Yoshida 4-1 in the 53-kilogram freestyle final to win the first-ever gold medal for a United States womens wrestler and derail Yoshidas quest for a fourth straight gold. It evoked memories of American Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardners victory over three-time gold medalist Aleksandr Karelin at the 2000 Olympics.Maroulis celebrated Thursdays win by leaping into coach Valentin Kalikas arms, then running around the mat in a circle and gripping the United States flag with both hands while it was draped over her back.At the end of it, I was like, `Really, I just did this? she said. Like, oh my gosh!Yoshida was trying to become the second woman to ever win four Olympic gold medals in a single event across four Summer Games, and the second wrestler to win four Olympic golds. Yoshidas teammate, Kaori Icho, accomplished the feats Wednesday by winning the 58 kilogram gold. Yoshida hadnt lost in a major tournament in years, but she had been less dominant in recent tournaments, and Maroulis was on a two-year win streak of her own.Its an honor to wrestle Yoshida, Maroulis said. For someone to win three gold medals and come back and risk that and accept that challenge to win a fourth -- thats another four years of work, dedication, of giving your life to the sport.Yoshida made no excuses after the match when asked why she lost.Just that the opponent is stronger than me, she said. I should have attacked sooner and faster, but the opponent was stronger than me.Maroulis said her coach, Valentin Kalika, played a key role in the victory. But even with the game plan in place, she became a bit tense before the start.Im like, stepping on the mat, and Im thinking, `I dont even know how this is going to get done. I dont know. Im just going to trust, and I just want to give my all, Maroulis said.Maroulis fell behind 1-0, but a takedown early in the second period gave her the lead for good.Ive dreamed of this my whole life, Maroulis said. I put it on this pedestal.A dream matchup in the womens wrestling 75 kilogram freestyle category was ruined when the United States Adeline Gray and Brazils Aline da Silva Ferreira both lost in the quarterfinals.Gray, the heavily favored three-time world champion, lost to Vasilisa Marzaliuk of Belarus 3-1 on Thursday. Marzaliuk finished fifth at the 2012 Olympics in the 72 kilogram class, and was third in the 2015 World Championships at 75 kilograms.Brazils crowd was fired up for da Silva Ferreira, a silver medalist from the 2014 World Championships, but she fell behind early and lost to Russias Ekaterina Bukina 4-3.Bukina won the bronze medal by scoring in the final seconds of a 5-3 win over Cameroons Annabel Laure Ali. Marzaliuk lost to Fengliu Zhang in the bronze medal match. In the 75 kilogram gold-medal match, Canadas Erica Wiebe defeated Kazakhstans Guzel Manyurova 6-0.Japans Risako Kawai defeated Belarus Maryia Mamashuk 3-0 for the 63 kilogram gold.I wanted a gold medal, but today I got the silver and thats OK with me, Mamashuk said. LOUIS -- St. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Matt Stutzman was born with no arms -- just stumps at the shoulders -- but he says theres almost nothing he cant do.He holds a world record for the most accurate distance shot in archery, which includes able-bodied archers. He drives a car without modifications -- right foot on the steering wheel -- plays basketball, and can write with both feet, both shoulders, and his mouth. He shaves and feeds himself with his feet, and his house in southeastern Iowa has no modifications of any kind.I tell my wife Amber theres only one thing I cant do, he said Wednesday. I cant change dirty diapers.Stutzman -- known widely as the Armless Archer -- has gone from being a depressed, unemployed stay-at-home father in 2009, to being famous and well-off. He now boasts lucrative sponsorship deals with British Petroleum, Nike and many others.I now travel full time and work, and my wife is a stay-at-home mom, caring for their sons Carter, Cameron and Alex, he said. Im not saying Im like LeBron- (James) rich, but Im comfortable enough that Im OK. Its not stressful anymore. He won a silver medal in the 2012 Paralympics in London, but was knocked out in Rio by one point on Wednesday in the quarterfinals. My whole goal for the games was to inspire people, Stutzman said. If I won a medal, that was just a cherry on top. I feel like Im doing a pretty good job of inspiring people. It just didnt work in my favor this time as far as winning a medal.Stutzman turned to archery in 2009 to feed his family, not to compete. The idea was to harvest an animal and put it in the freezer to have food. One day I had a brilliant idea to grab a bow, and I felt like I could put food on the table. It worked out pretty good, he said. When you are desperate to provide for your family, youre willing to try whatever.Along with plenty of determination, Stutzman also has a keen sense of humor. He likes to recount awkward moments about shaking hands -- with a man who has no arms.At the Pan American Games a year ago in Toronto, the medal presenter reached to grab Stutzmans shoulder to congratulate him. Stutzman often greets people this way.As he did, Stutzman, instead, offered his foot.So I went like this, Stutzman said, motioning to his leg and foot to demonstrate. He didnt know what too do.ddddddddddddr the time in 2009 when he searched on Google for tips about archery.I actually googled: How to teach a guy without arms to shoot a bow.Stutzman laughed. And there was nothing on Google, so I had to sit down and figure it out.Stutzman was adopted at 13 months by Leon and Jean Stutzman. He said his parents would always let him try things first, never jumping in immediately to help.I had to learn how to adapt to the world, instead of the world adapting to me, he said, recounting hours when he and his father would toss around an imaginary baseball.I dont remember when I first began to learn how to eat, he said. I just remember one day like: `Wow, Im using my foot.Stutzman holds the bow with his right foot, extends his leg and braces the blunt end of the arrow against his shoulder. He triggers the shot with jaw and back muscles. He recalled walking into a sporting goods store to buy a bow, and the clerk asked: How are you going to shoot it?Stutzman replied: I dont know. Just give it to me and leave the room.Thats his general attitude. Just find a way, and get out of my way.If I can take a bow and compete in a sport that people think you have to have hands for, and I can do it well, then what excuse do others have about sitting around, or not getting a job or making their lives better?Stutzman, who lives in the small town of Fairfield, Iowa, has developed a cult following. Fans screamed his name on Wednesday during his competition at Rios famous Sambadrome, many clamoring for a photo with him.Americans Joe Lin and Kiratiana Freelon called him over for selfies. Lin worked as an Olympic volunteer and Freelon works for the Rio organizing committee.Hes the Armless Archer, Lin said. Hes been getting lots of attention like in advertisements. Ive seen him in commercials.Stutzman still cant believe the following that fame has given him.Its amazing for me if I can influence somebody in a positive way, he said. You have to do it. You have to follow your dreams. Youve got to go after it.---Stephen Wade on Twitter: http://twitter.com/StephenWadeAP . His work can be found at http://bigstory.ap.org/content/stephen-wade ' ' '
