SAN DIEGO -- San Diego lost All-Star shortstop Everth Cabrera when he was suspended for 50 games Monday for his connection to a drug case. Its a disappointing development for the Padres, even if general manager Josh Byrnes thinks its good for baseball. Cabrera, who leads the NL with 37 stolen bases, was penalized by Major League Baseball for his relationship to Biogenesis of America, a closed anti-aging clinic in Florida accused of distributing banned performing-enhancing drugs. "As we continue to try to clean up the game, its a painful but necessary step," Byrnes said during a conference call. "This is difficult. It hits close to home," he added. "But in the longer view its a good thing for the game. I think this is a big day for Major League Baseball and the players whove been clean for some time. Their voices are being heard." Byrnes and manager Bud Black said they still dont know Cabreras level of involvement with Biogenesis. "Obviously, guys have been suspended without a positive test, so well probably find out a little more what the evidence or information was that led to his suspension," Byrnes said. Black met with Cabrera during spring training. "Were satisfied by what we heard," Black said then. "We believe this will resolve itself in a positive way." "That was four months ago and maybe through more investigation or more research as it pertained to Cabby, things changed," Black said Monday. "What those things are, I dont know." Black thinks Cabrera had been told by the union and his agent "to probably be as close-lipped as he could. We didnt know a lot of what was going on. We didnt know what Cabbys situation was in regard to the Biogenesis clinic." "Cabby expressed that he made a mistake even getting involved," Black added. "Again, I dont know the level of involvement. I think all of us in the game hope all players are past this. With this, we hope Cabby learns a valuable lesson. I do think that through this, through the season, he was remorseful. Time will tell how his career moves forward. Hes got to find a way to put this behind him." While the Padres control Cabreras rights for a few more years, "I dont think well give him a long term deal until we know more," Byrnes said. The switch-hitting Cabrera was San Diegos leadoff batter. He is hitting .283 with 54 runs scored, four homers and 31 RBIs. He led the NL with 44 stolen bases last year. Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal was suspended the first 50 games of the season for testing positive to testosterone. Hes out for the season with a knee injury. Pitcher Fautino De Los Santos, who was on the Padres 40-man roster when the Biogenesis names first leaked out, also was suspended. Hes rehabbing an injury in Arizona. "Its obvious that it was the clinic 3,000 miles away that was sort of the centre of all this," Byrnes said. "It affected us and weve got to deal with it."Diamondbacks Jerseys 2019 . It may also have contributed to a dip in batting and catching form in recent months.Ross is at the moment having a little bit of trouble with his eyes so hes looking after those at the current point and will take all the necessary steps to make them better, captain Kane Williamson said after New Zealands eight-wicket win at Hagley Oval. At this stage we are not 100% sure what it is. Theres a growth thats come across a little bit. Its been fine for long time, and been monitored for long time. It is a gradual thing as opposed to sometthing thats very sudden.ddddddddddddTaylor had a similar eye test about a year ago, before he scored a career-best 290 against Australia. However, Hesson said his vision may have worsened since then. Taylor has averaged 11.44 across his last 10 Test innings, and has not made an international half-century in his last 15 innings, though he did have an outstanding run of scores against Zimbabwe immediately prior to this period.Twelve months ago he had his annual check-up, got some eye drops and scored 290 in next game, Hesson said. In last few months it appears to have deteriorated a little bit. Well get some further info from the specialist. We all need regular check-ups, and about six months ago, Ross had no issues at all. It might have come on a little bit quicker than we would like. Ross was keen to get it seen to. ' ' '
