LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska led overmatched University of Mary by 10 points less than five minutes into the game Tuesday on its way to a 70-38 win in a game that gave the Huskers bench the opportunity to play more than half the minutes. That was key for a team that has only five experienced players on the roster, all of whom start. It was good for them to get a feel for what the game is like, said Michael Jacobsen, who led the Huskers with 10 points. Weve been practicing for about two months now. Its hard when you go against each other so much. ... In the game its a totally different feel. I think its good for them to get their minutes and just figure out their roles. All five of Nebraskas non-starters played at least 20 minutes and combined for 30 points with each making at least a field goal. That was a marked improvement from Sundays home opener against Sacramento State in which the Nebraska bench made just two field goals and contributed only nine points. It was really, really important, said Isaiah Roby, who came off the bench to score seven points in 24 minutes. Obviously, we have to execute stuff against other people and also just getting tired. All of us were dripping sweat. ... He (Nebraska coach Tim Miles) kind of challenged us to step our game up tonight. We still have a lot to work on obviously ... but I think we stepped up a little bit more.Nebraska (2-0) was never challenged by the NCAA Division II school from North Dakota that is Miles alma mater. Nebraska went up by 12-2 on Jack McVeighs 3-pointer at the 15:18 mark and stretched the lead to 30-8 on another of McVeighs 3s with 5:52 left in the first half.Mary (0-3) cut the Nebraska lead to 15 on Damonta Henrys 3-pointer that opened the second half. But the Huskers quickly pushed the lead over 20, going up 41-19 on McVeighs 3-pointer with 17:37 left. Nebraskas largest lead was 32.The Marauders struggled against the Nebraska defense, hitting just 7 of 28 shots in the first half and finished 29 percent from the field. The bigger, stronger Huskers also dominated on the boards, outrebounding Mary 45-21Nebraska hit 50 percent of its shots, but committed 17 turnoversMary played in front of the largest crowd it will likely see this season (8,459). Attendance at Marauder games, home and on the road, averages about 1,000. That should work to Marys advantage, said coach Joe Kittell.Theres not going to be any atmosphere thats going to be more hostile than this, Kittell said. Our guys understand that, played in it, and it shouldnt bother us anymore. Really excited about this group, I know were zero and three right now but there are a lot of good kids out there. They want to win, they want to get better.BIG PICTURENebraska: Miles said the relatively low score and margin of victory can be attributed to Marys strategy of running down the shot clock on offense and impatience on the part of the Huskers once they finally got the ball.University of Mary: The Marauders took full advantage of a game against a Division I foe, chartering a flight to bring fans from Bismarck to Lincoln. Those who paid $289 for the trip got lunch with Nebraska football coach Mike Riley, a tour of the athletic facilities and a dinner with Nebraska baseball coach and North Dakota native Darin Erstad.UP NEXTNebraska will host Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. Saturday, a starting time set to avoid conflict with the Nebraska-Maryland football game at 11 a.m.Mary will return to Bismarck where it will host Yellowstone Christian Monday.White Sox Jerseys China . PAUL, Minn.LOS ANGELES -- Michael Cuddyer tuned up for his first Home Run Derby with a two-run shot, the kind of boost that hes been giving Colorado in the first half of the season. Cuddyer also drove in another run to help the Rockies defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 Sunday in the teams last game before the All-Star break. The right fielder made his second All-Star team as an NL reserve, and will compete in the Home Run Derby on Monday. He had a career-best and club-record 27-game hitting streak from May 28-June 30, going .372 with 19 RBIs, six homers and 17 runs scored. "I hope I bring a lot to the table," Cuddyer said. "The whole first half individually was a lot of fun, and the fact that were still in it made it even better." The clubs split their four-game series, leaving Colorado with a 46-50 record. The Rockies are in third place in the NL West, 4 1/2 games back of first-place Arizona. "Were healthy again, and weve weathered this last road trip, so I think that weve got some momentum going into the second half," said Cuddyer, who snapped an 0-for-7 skid that included four strikeouts in two previous games in the series. His 16th home run with two outs in the fifth extended Colorados lead to 3-0. DJ LeMahieu grounded out to start the inning before Carlos Gonzalez got hit by a pitch from Ricky Nolasco and Troy Tulowitzki popped up. Cuddyer homered into the right-field pavilion. He had an RBI single with two outs in the first for Colorados first run. "We held the Dodgers to just two runs in the last three games, and thats a team thats been going better than anybody in the game," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "So its a big win and a nice way to end the first half." Jhoulys Chacin (9-4) allowed one run and six hits in six innings, struck out six and walked three to win for the sixth time in his last seven starts. The right-hander improved to 8-5 in his career against the Dodgers, his most wins against any one team. "It was a very impressive outing by Jhoulys," Weiss said. "In the sixth inning when they had runners at first and second, I just went out there to tell him This is your game. If you get through this inning, we win the game. And thats exactly what he did." Chacins nine victories at the break are the most for a Rockies pitcher since Ubaldo Jimenezs 15-1 record in the first half of 2010.dddddddddddd. Chacin succeeded at the plate, too, going 2 for 2 with a walk. "Before I was just trying to just throw it hard," he said, "but now Im just trying to make my pitch, get them to hit it and get themselves out and get out of the inning with the least amount of damage." Rafael Betancourt pitched the ninth to earn his 15th save in 16 chances. "The Dodgers had been on a real offensive tear prior to this series, so it was nice to see our pitchers be pretty successful against them," Tulowitzki said. "Thats what its going to take if were going to make any noise in the second half. Its going to be a big factor. The pitchings got to be good, and they were this series, thats for sure." The Dodgers fell back to .500 at 47-47 after winning 17 of their last 22 games to climb into second place, 2 1/2 games back. Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig wasnt in the starting lineup, but he entered as a pinch-hitter in the fifth. He singled and then scored on Adrian Gonzalezs single with two outs. "Were in position and kind of have it in our hands," manager Don Mattingly said. Nolasco (6-9) gave up three runs and eight hits over five innings of his home debut with the Dodgers. The right-hander struck out four and walked three while pitching in front of a large contingent of family and friends from his nearby hometown of Rialto. "It was a little bit of a battle," Nolasco said. "Just had a little bit of control issues. Wish I could have that one pitch to Cuddyer back."
