ROSSBURG, Ohio -- About midway through the fourth annual Camping World Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway, Tony Stewarts father was beaming.?Have you ever seen the trucks put on a show like this? said the dad of the track owner and three-time Sprint Cup champion.?Well, no. They dont race on dirt anywhere else. So the show is so different than any other race on the NASCAR circuit, and thats what makes it an event to watch.?You know its a good event when people thought it was a great race and it only had two leaders and was won by a Sprint Cup driver.?In some ways, there is no reason this should be a good race. Compared to sprint cars half the weight or dirt late models with suspensions specifically built to race on dirt, the NASCAR trucks plod around the speedway.?But for a driver such as Kyle Larson, there is still a fun factor and a challenge factor. After coming close but not winning two years ago, Larson considered the win Wednesday night a big accomplishment.?These trucks arent designed to race on dirt, Larson said. But it also makes them a lot of fun. This place has a lot of character with bumps and moisture in different spots -- it makes a driver really work hard to find those parts of the race track to pick up [speed].?Rico Abreu ran a 12.7-second lap in a sprint car at Eldora last year. On Wednesday, he qualified with a lap of 21.19 seconds.?And yet he loved it, loved the 150-mile, 2-hour affair that could be considered brutal for a dirt-track race. He went from starting 27th to finishing third.?Any time I get to race, Im happy, Abreu said. Im in my comfort zone. ... To run a truck around here is its own feeling than nothing else Ive ever felt.?The average speed of the winner? A spectacular 41.971 mph.?When you come here for a sprint-car race, its hard enough to run the fence for 30 laps, said race runner-up Christopher Bell. When you come here in a truck, its 150. Its extremely difficult to do that and keep your truck in good shape.?It doesnt appear fun at times as virtually every truck has damage. And while some drivers likely would never voluntarily race at Eldora, even those who have significant dirt experience enjoy the challenge.?It definitely is a lot of fun, Bell said. It definitely takes some survival. ... Its really tough. Its extremely hard and its a really long race.?Larson said the heat of any lengthy stock-car event can wear on a driver. But theres something about a dirt race that adds to the challenge. Its something the fans can see and appreciate, even if the trucks dont have the cool factor of sprint cars that run laps five or six seconds quicker.?Youre working behind the wheel a lot harder just because it is a dirt track, Larson said. The character within the race track changes lap after lap. Its tough.
