RENTON, Wash. - Rookie Brock Coyle is about to become the next option for the Seattle Seahawks at middle linebacker.Seattle linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. said Wednesday the Seahawks are planning on starting Coyle at middle linebacker this week against Oakland. The undrafted rookie out of Montana has only played a handful of snaps during the season but impressed Seattles coaches enough during the preseason that theyre comfortable with the move. Its his position to lose. Hes in there right now. He can mess it up by a bad week. We could change our mind, Norton said. I think we were pleasantly surprised by Brock in his performance this summer, throughout the camp, throughout the preseason. He stepped in when Bobby (Wagner) was out then. Hes going to do the same thing now. We know exactly what were getting and were very pleased with what we have. Thats why hes here. The Seahawks have been without Wagner for the past two weeks because of a toe injury suffered against Dallas. Seattles initial move was to slide K.J. Wright to middle linebacker and insert Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith at outside linebacker. But its unknown whether Smith will be healthy for Sunday after suffering a groin injury against Carolina.Rather than completely juggling the linebacker corps, the Seahawks are planning to move Wright back outside and insert the rookie. Coyles representatives first tweeted congratulations for their client getting his first start.Thats why our depth is so important and Brocks work that he had with Bobby out in the summertime is very important, Norton said.Coyle has appeared in every game this season but mostly on special teams. He has played less than 10 defensive snaps. But he got plenty of time during the preseason when Wagner was out with a hamstring injury. Coyle started Seattles first two preseason games and saw extensive time in the other two.Coyle is the latest undrafted rookie to find his way onto Seattles roster, a group that includes wide receivers Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse, tight end Cooper Helfet and backup safety Jeron Johnson.Even with Coyle likely to start, the Seahawks will likely rotate their healthy linebackers. The Seahawks are high on the improvement of rookie Kevin Pierre-Louis, who saw his most extensive play last week against Carolina. Pierre-Louis was in for 20 defensive snaps last week, had three tackles and his blitz on Cam Newton in the third quarter led to an interception. He had some exciting plays, Carroll said. Hes real fast and he played real fast, looked fast on the field. Looked good in the open field, blitzed really well and hell be a part of the plan if Malcolm cant go this week.NOTES: Center Max Unger (foot) and CB Byron Maxwell (calf) have a chance of returning this week from their injuries, Carroll said. Unger was hurt in Seattles Week 5 win at Washington, while Maxwell was injured a week later against Dallas. ... Carroll again did not have a timeline for the return of Wagner (toe) or TE Zach Miller (ankle). Carroll said Miller was feeling the best hes felt by far after having treatment last weekend. Its the first really positive sign weve had, Carroll said of Millers recovery.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLShaquille ONeal Jersey .I get texts: Do you know Drake? Ratliff will miss at least the first six games of the season after he was placed on the physically unable to perform list with hamstring and groin injuries. The Cowboys made the move Tuesday as part of getting their active roster down to 75 players. Ratliff, who turns 32 Thursday, missed off-season workouts and training camp after sports hernia surgery late last season. He missed 10 games in 2012 with ankle and groin problems. He last played Nov. 18 against Cleveland. Dallas cut nine players and placed defensive end Tyrone Crawford and lineman Ryan Cook on season-ending injured reserve. The released players were receivers Anthony Amos, Jared Green and Eric Rogers, quarterback Nick Stephens, tight end Colin Cochart, guard Dennis Godfrey, linebacker Deon Lacey, cornerback Brandon Underwood and kicker Brett Maher. Cowboys executive vice-president Stephen Jones said he was confident Ratliff would play this season. "I believe in Jay," Jones said before the move with Ratliff was announced. "Theres some things that can be frustrating when you have injuries. Im convinced that weve got a program now -- hes had a few setbacks -- that hopefully will put him on the road where he can play for us at some point this season." Ratliff has only two sacks since signing a seven-year, $49 million contract with $18 million guaranteed two years ago. He will have missed 16 of 22 games by the time hes eligible to return Oct. 20 at Philadelphia. "The groin injury has been the one hes been dealing with mostly through all of last year and through thee off-season, so I think the biggest issue with him is regaining his strength," coach Jason Garrett said.dddddddddddd "Strength enough to go out on the field and do the things he needs to do to anchor and change direction and all the things that are required to play his position." With Ratliff sidelined, the Cowboys could be forced to play the opener Sept. 8 against the New York Giants without both starters on the left side in their new four-man defensive front. Left end Anthony Spencer is recovering from knee surgery. George Selvie, a four-year veteran who didnt join Dallas until after training camp started, has taken Spencers place. Nick Hayden, a sixth-year pro who was out of football last season, started in Ratliffs spot in last weekends preseason game against Cincinnati. "Hes done a very good job for us since hes been here," Garrett said. "He shows up as a playmaker in the run game and also affecting the quarterback in the pass game." The release of Stephens means Alex Tanney will get most or all of the playing time in the final preseason game Thursday night against Houston. The Cowboys didnt sign Tanney, a second-year player out of Monmouth College in Illinois, until the start of training camp and need to decide whether to keep a third quarterback behind Tony Romo and Kyle Orton. Rogers made a strong early impression in training camp in Oxnard, Calif. -- not far from his college home at Cal Lutheran -- but didnt have a catch in four preseason games. Green, the son of former Washington Redskins star and Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green, and Amos had three catches apiece in the preseason. ' ' '
