After being humbled in their first loss in eight games, the Pittsburgh Penguins want to get back to the fast starts that have characterized an otherwise excellent early season. Setting the tone early is precisely the reason the Toronto Maple Leafs winning streak has continued. Pittsburgh looks to bounce back by winning a fourth straight meeting with Toronto as it concludes a five-game road trip tonight in the annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game. Viewers in the Leafs region can watch the game live on TSN4 or listen live on TSN Radio 1050 Toronto with coverage starting at 7pm et. Toronto rallied after giving up the first goal in each of its previous two contests before scoring the first five in Wednesdays 6-1 victory over Boston, extending its win streak to three. The Maple Leafs (9-5-2) have won all six games in which theyve scored the initial goal. Phil Kessel scored twice as Toronto improved to 6-0-1 when he nets a goal. James van Riemsdyk had a goal and two assists to extend his point streak to a career-high six. Its a long season, van Riemsdyk said. You dont read too much into any one individual game. We just want to keep getting better, play the way we need to play and go from there. Coach Randy Carlyle echoed the sentiment. We dont want to get too far ahead of ourselves, he said. Sure, we feel good about ourselves right now, but whos coming on Friday? That would be a Penguins team that earned a 5-2 road victory over the Maple Leafs on Oct. 11. Crosby and Evgeni Malkin each had a goal and two assists as Pittsburgh won for the fifth time in six meetings. Crosby has 13 goals and eight assists in his last 13 against the Leafs, earning at least a point in 12. Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves in last months matchup and could be in goal again. He had a 1.15 goals-against average while winning six consecutive starts prior to Tuesday. However, Fleury will get the night off as backup Thomas Greiss gets the call in goal. Greiss has a 1-0-1 record in two appearances with a 2.42 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. The Penguins will have to contend with a red-hot Kessel, whose 10 goals rank among the most in the league. He has recorded eight with eight assists in his last 10. I was talking to (goaltender James) Reimer the other day about what it is about Phils shot that makes it so hard to save, Toronto center Peter Holland said. Its tough for the goalies to read where its going. Obviously the speed he gets it off helps him out, too. Its uncertain if Reimer or Jonathan Bernier will be in net for this matchup. Bernier has gone 4-0-1 with a 1.78 GAA in his last five and made 36 saves in the first meeting with the Penguins. The Penguins (10-3-1) held a 33-8 goal advantage during a seven-game winning streak before allowing three first-period goals in Tuesdays 5-0 loss to the New York Rangers. They were shut out for the first time in 31 games, including last seasons playoffs, and allowed a power-play goal after killing all 37 penalties over their previous 10. However many in a row we won, thats no excuse. We werent good enough, said Sidney Crosby, who was held without a point for the second time in three games. Sometimes you dont have good starts, and you dont always pay for it. (Tuesday), we definitely did. Pittsburgh had won each of its first three games in which it trailed first. The Penguins, however, still lead the NHL with a plus-11 goal differential in the opening period. I think it was preparation, coach Mike Johnston said. Its from the coaches to the players. We had to be a lot better prepared in the first 10 minutes than we were. I think it took us just way too long to respond. Instead, Tim Schaller completed his third-period natural hat trick at 19:02 and Phil Varone scored the winner 15 seconds later as the Rochester Americans erased a 3-0 deficit to top the Marlies 4-3 in American Hockey League action. Rochester scored four goals on 19 third period shots while holding Toronto to just nine shots on goal in the final 40 minutes. "The challenge that I have here tonight is the guys with letters on their sweater. Our captain (Trevor Smith) had the puck on his stick, didnt get it deep, game over," said Marlies coach Steve Spott. "Thats our expectation of (Korbinian) Holzer, Trevor Smith, Jerred Smithson -- they have to be better, they know that, I called them out after the game and Im calling them out now. "They have to be better." The win stretches the Americans win streak to three games and helps them keep pace with the Charlotte Checkers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Smith, who was on the ice for three Rochester (33-27-10) goals, failed to get the puck deep off a centre ice faceoff. The Americans capitalized with Varone beating Christopher Gibson with a wrist shot for his 16th of the season just 15 seconds after Schaller had tied it. "Its disappointing. Were trying to do the best we can out there and try and lead the way for the guys and were making mistakes, were taking penalties and it wasnt a good day for our group," said Smith. "We didnt get the puck deep, it took a couple bounces, they got 40-plus shots on net, one of them is going to take a lucky bounce, I think it hit a stick and Gibby didnt even have a chance on it Schaller got Rochester on the board at 4:03 of the third one timing a Brayden Irwin pass home for his fifth of the season. At 16:40 of the final frame, Schaller poked home a lose puck, on a power play, for his sixth of the season making it a one-goal game.dddddddddddd Then, with their net empty for an extra attacker, Schaller completed the hat trick poking home a lose puck tying the game 3-3 with 58 seconds remaining. The goal was initially waved off as referee Jean-Philippe Sylvain believed the puck was head-butted in. However, upon review, Spott was told, "It went from the head, it touched Christopher Gibson and then went off one of their players stick. You have to trust the video, you have to trust the call." Irwin finished the night with four assists. Josh Leivo scored twice and Brad Ross had the other for the Marlies (41-22-6). Gibson made 39 saves in the loss. Andrey Makarov made 13 saves for his third career AHL win. Leivo gave Toronto a three-goal cushion with just 21 seconds remaining in the second period one-timing a Smith feed past Makarov for his 20th goal of the season. The Marlies scored twice, on their first two shots of the game, to open a 2-0 lead five minutes in. Ross opened the scoring backhanding a Sam Carrick feed blocker side past Makarov for his sixth of the season. It was Rosss first goal in 11 games and first in two months. Leivo made it 2-0 at 5:12, on a power play, beating Makarov with a shot from the face-off dot for his 19th goal of the season. Saturday was Leivos fourth multi-goal game of the season. "Good on him," said Spott. "We had a meeting with him this morning, he said hed rebound, he did. He played like we need him to play." Torontos Carter Ashton, who was playing in his first game since an emergency recall by the Maple Leafs on Thursday, had two assists. Notes: Frazer McLaren (hip flexor), Andrew MacWilliam (concussion) and Spencer Abbott (shoulder) all missed Saturdays game. Defenceman Zachary Yuen and forward Fabrice Herzog were healthy scratches. With goaltender Drew MacIntyre on emergency recall with the Maple Leafs, the Marlies recalled Christopher Gibson from the ECHL Friday. ' ' '
