Retired Newcastle champion-turned-administrator Joel Griffiths has lashed members of the A-League outfit who appear to not care about winning.Griffiths, who now holds a senior football department role at the club, believes the fifth-placed Jets are being held back by players going through the motions on the pitch.I look at reactions from the players when we do get a goal against us. I look at reactions more than their performances, Griffiths told AAP.I want to see players who actually want to win, not just are happy to be out there. And on the weekend I felt that there were a couple of players that were just happy to be out there, happy to just do enough when sometimes enough isnt enough.Youve actually got to go the extra mile and want to win. (Midfielder) Wayne Brown and our captain Nigel (Boogaard) are perfect examples of that. They constantly want to win.Griffiths, the A-Leagues top goal-scorer in the Jets 2007-08 championship-winning campaign, suggested the clubs injury-crisis has led to a lack of accountability among players this season. He said strengthening of the squad through the recent returns of Boogaard, Daniel Mullen, Andrew Nabbout and Morten Nordstrand was boosting the squads mindset. Now weve got a couple of wins and everyones coming back, people are going into games knowing that they have got to perform week-in, week-out, otherwise we have good, quality players on the bench, Griffiths said.Everyones accountable now.On a two-game winning streak for the first time this season, the Jets will soon have a full complement at their disposal with Finnish striker Aleksandr Kokko set to be back for the Boxing Day clash with Wellington.Griffiths also backed coach Mark Jones recent declaration the sides underwhelming season was down to injuries. You take eight players out of Sydney FC or Brisbane Roar, and all of a sudden youll have a team that will struggle, he said at the Jack Newton Classic in the NSW Hunter Valley.Im not going to get carried away with the two wins, because we expect to win every game, but if we keep rolling along then well sneak up the table and could surprise. The important thing for us is make sure our youth system is better so we can rely on players when we do have a crisis. "Its a great feeling and Im excited to be truly part of the team now," Manuel said, in comments released by the Bills. "Im just glad it was done earlier instead of later." Manuel signed a four-year deal worth $8.9 million, a day after the Bills closed a three-day mandatory minicamp -- their final session before training camp opens on July 28 in suburban Rochester. A person familiar with the deal released the terms of the contract, and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Bills did not disclose the figures. The person said the deal includes a $4.84 million signing bonus. Though there is an option to add a fifth year to the contract, the person said it is considered a four-year deal. Manuel was selected 16th overall out of Florida State, and was the only quarterback selected in the first round. He is competing with veteran free-agent addition Kevin Kolb for the starting job. With Manuel signed, the Bills have all eight of their rookie draft picks under contract. At 6-foot-4 and 237 pounds, Manuels a strong-armed mobile player, who went 25-6 in four seasons with the Seminoles. Despite Manuels success, questions were raised over his decision-making skills. He finished with 47 touchdowns and 28 interceptions, which were the result of him occasionally forcing throws. Manuel moved up the teams quarterback depth chart after the Bills released veteran Tarvaris Jackson on Monday. Coach Doug Marrone has not provided a timeline as to when he expects to name a starter, though its expected that both Kollb and Manuel will get an opportunity to continuing competing through the Bills first two preseason games.dddddddddddd Manuel welcomed the additional practice time he earned following Jacksons departure. He also understood that he needed to continue improving to show hes capable of making the immediate jump from college to NFL rookie starter. "I dont think thats anything I have to remind myself of," Manuel said. "Im still trying to learn, still trying to get a great feel for my teammates. Im still trying to earn the respect of the veteran guys as well as the rookies." The Bills are counting on Manuel to be their long-term starter and secure a position thats been unsettled since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired following the 1996 season. Since then, no quarterback has lasted more than three seasons as a starter in Buffalo. That includes Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was cut in March after nearly two inconsistent seasons behind centre. The Bills are coming off a 6-10 finish, their eighth consecutive losing season. And theyve not made the playoffs in 13 seasons, the NFL longest active drought. Manuel is part of a new-look offence under Marrone, who took over in January after Chan Gailey was fired. The Bills have almost entirely revamped their group of receivers behind returning starter Stevie Johnson. Buffalo drafted Robert Woods 41st overall out of Southern California, and then added Texas speedster Marquise Goodwin with the 78th pick. Following the draft, Buffalo signed undrafted rookie DaRick Rogers. Though Rogers was projected as a top-10 receiver prospect, he was overlooked in the draft because of a troubled college career split between Tennessee and Tennessee Tech. ' ' '
