The 23-year-old Sock stunned 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic in the third round and is into the second week at the US Open for the first time. Theyve met once previously -- a year ago, in Madrid. Tsonga won a third-set tiebreaker.No. 10 Gael Monfils vs. Marcos Baghdatis, 11 a.m. ET on the Grandstand (Watch)A tasty, old-school confrontation of the elastic Frenchman and the resilient Cypriot. Monfils, at 30, is enjoying a renaissance, and Baghdatis hasnt been this far in a major in nearly eight years. Monfils owns a 2-1 career record over Baghdatis. Oddly enough, they met a few weeks ago in Cincinnati, with Monfils prevailing 7-5, 6-0.No. 8 Madison Keys vs. Caroline Wozniacki, second match on Arthur Ashe Stadium (Watch)Keys, the 21-year-old American, pulled herself out of a monumental hole in the third round, erasing a 5-1 third-set deficit against Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka. Now Keys gets Wozniacki, a former No. 1 player who has reached two finals and two more semifinals here. The two have never played each other.No. 4 Rafael Nadal vs. Lucas Pouille, third match on Arthur Ashe Stadium (Watch)So much for any injury concerns or fatigue playing a factor for Nadal. He hasnt dropped a set in three matches here and has been pushed past 4-4 just once in nine sets. A good sign for the former two-time US Open champ, who two weeks ago fell in the second round of Cincinnati, conceding he was tired. Pouille, 22, from France, is one of the games rising stars, but he could be the one suffering from fatigue. Hes coming off a 3-hour, 24-minute marathon win in his last match -- his second straight five-set battle.No. 2 Angelique Kerber vs. No. 14 Petra Kvitova, 7 p.m. ET on Arthur Ashe Stadium (Watch) This is the first real obstacle here to Kerbers run at Serena Williams No. 1 ranking. While Kvitova sharpened her game with a third-round win over Elina Svitolina, Kerber breezed against Catherine Bellis, dropping only two games. These two players have faced off eight times in the past five years and, as you might expect, its a dead heat at 4-all.No. 1 Novak Djokovic vs. Kyle Edmund, following Kerber-Kvitova (Watch) Edmund, a 21-year-old from Great Britain, is the least likely suspect still alive in the top half of the draw. His reward is an audience with the games best player. They played earlier this year, in Miami, and Djokovic came away with a 6-3, 6-3 win. The largest question looming is this: How will the lack of playing time (Djokovic has played only six games in five days) affect the world No. 1? MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama has cleared the way for defensive back Maurice Smith to transfer within the Southeastern Conference, according to a person with knowledge of the decision.Speaking on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the school hasnt disclosed the information, the person said Alabama has granted Smiths release. The Tuscaloosa News first reported the decision.Smith will have to be granted a waiver from the SEC, which has restrictions on athletes transferring to league schools with less than two years of eligibility remaining, including graduate transfers. Smith graduated earlier this month. He has been trying to follow former Alabama assistants Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker to Georgia but was blocked from moving to another SEC school.A statement from the SEC said the league doesnt comment on such waiver requests but they are reviewed on an individual basis. The SEC does not provide waivers of SEC rules absent circumstances that demonstrate a clear reason for granting an exception to those rules, the league stateement said.dddddddddddd Each waiver request is reviewed on a case by case basis. The requirements for granting of a waiver include that the athletes athletic scholarship was not renewed. After Wednesdays practice, head coach Nick Saban said Alabama had done everything it could to allow the conference to make the decision about whatever they decide is in the best interest of the conference and the SEC rules relative to Maurice Smith. So that is past us now, Saban said. It is beyond us. We dont really need to talk about that anymore and I dont have any other comments to make about it.Smith was a first-team nickel back for the Tide during the spring. He played in every game last season, making 15 tackles.Smart disagreed with the decision of his former boss to block Smiths transfer. The Bulldogs coach has said that he would absolutely support a graduate transfers right to transfer to another SEC school. ' ' '
