NEW DELHI， Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The condition of ailing Chief Minister of southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu， J Jayalalithaa Monday continued to be critical， doctors said.


Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening at Apollo hospital in Chennai， the capital city of Tamil Nadu， where she was being treated for a prolonged lung infection for the past three months.


"Our team of expert doctors continue to closely monitor and treat the Honourable Chief Minister. However her condition remains critical，" a spokesman of Apollo hospital said.


Jayalalitha considered to be India's one of the most popular and powerful politicians has been put on crucial life support systems with machines taking over lung and heart functions.


A team of specialists attending her have administered Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after her condition became a cause for concern.


"A large team of doctors from Apollo and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) continue to provide all life saving measures，" the spokesman said.


Hundreds of people including women gathered outside hospital holding photographs of Jayalalithaa and praying for their beloved leader. The women were weeping， beating their heads and chests in despair.


The police have blocked all roads leading to the hospital and beefed up security across the state.


Officials suspect her supporters could resort to violence and acts of self-immolation in the event of bad news related to her.


Legislators from Jayalalithaa's All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Khazagham (AIADMK) who visited hospital to see their leader in the morning stated the condition of chief minister was improving after an operation， a claim refuted by the hospital.


Reports said violence broke out outside the Apollo hospital in evening. Police used batons to prevent crowd of thousands from crossing barricades.


In Oct.， Jayalalithaa handed over all her responsibilities and portfolios to her deputy and trusted colleague O Panneerselvam.
