CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The numbers sound superb. Miami gave up a mere 22 yards rushing in its opening game of the season, scored 10 touchdowns, set a school record with 42 points in a quarter, picked off two passes, blocked a punt and allowed only three points. So how should they react when watching the film?Horrified, Hurricanes defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said.He was serious. Even with many things going right, Miami still has plenty of work to do.What Miami dealt with after beating Florida A&M 70-3 likely wasnt any different than what Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan and Oklahoma State faced after they won openers by an average score of 68-9. Great-looking Week 1 scoreboards arent a cause for massive celebration, and not even the third-largest margin of victory in program history could dupe the Hurricanes into believing otherwise.I think most of our guys, the more mature guys anyway, understand when they make a mistake, Miami coach Mark Richt said Sunday, a day after his debut coaching his alma mater. They know we can get better. There was much to like. Miami had three running backs all eclipse 100 yards, Brad Kaaya passed for four touchdowns while barely breaking a sweat, the teams 13 pass completions went to nine receivers, nine players scored touchdowns and 29 Hurricanes found their way onto the defensive stat sheet. And a return to the AP Top 25 -- the next poll comes out Tuesday -- seems quite possible.Only eight current Miami players have appeared in a game for a ranked Hurricanes team. Kaaya isnt one of them; he was a high school senior when Miami was last part of the Top 25.If they rank us outside the Top 25, if they rank us top 25, 24, it doesnt matter, Kaaya said. I think weve got guys who are still hungry and are still going to keep going. This is a good win, a good team win, Coach Richts first win, but in the grand scheme of things we have a lot bigger fish to fry. You guys all know that. Weve got to win the big games, to be honest.Even with an easy win, Miami couldnt escape unscathed. The Hurricanes announced Sunday night that redshirt freshman linebacker Jamie Gordinier will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, another blow to a defense with major depth problems. Miami lost its three leading tacklers from last season after an investigation into their access to rented luxury cars, and started three true freshmen at linebacker on Saturday.Hence, thats why Diaz wants the players who remain to be horrified. He says problems on film can be good things -- since they promote more learning.Theres going to be a lot of things that we dont like, Diaz said. But now you finally have something to fix. You can tell them every day in practice -- theyre like `I hear you coach, I hear you -- and then they see it in a game and theyre like `Oh, yeah, we left that guy wide open. You make game corrections. Good football teams usually make a big jump from Week 1 to Week 2.The way to do that, he said, is to not overreact to how good a 70-3 win looks on paper. Its imperative that we come back with a mentality that we have got to improve off this performance next week, Diaz said. And if any further reminders are needed, their next opponent -- Florida Atlantic, which visits this Saturday -- gave Miami quite a few problems in the first half of their meeting on the Owls home field a year ago.Just because the first game ended up with that score, that cant help you relax, Miami receiver Braxton Berrios said. That should feed you. That should really drive you a little bit more. Thats what we can do. COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Missouri Tigers were a bit short-handed for the start of preseason camp Thursday after defensive linemen Walter Brady and Harold Brantley were dismissed from the team.Brady, a freshman All-America last season, was kicked off for violating undisclosed team policies. He made nine starts last season and tied for the team lead with seven sacks, plus led Southeastern Conference freshmen with 12 1/2 combined sacks and tackles for loss.Brantley, a senior, was dismissed for failure to live up to academic expectations. He missed all of last season after suffering multiple injuries in an auto accident.Neither players name was listed on the team roster heading into the first workout Thursday.Everybody in our program, I want to have an opportunity to provide them the chance to be successful, Odom said. Im excited about the guys weve got out here today. I wish Harold and Walter nothing but the best. Theyve done a good job in their time at Missouri and I wish them nothing but the best. The defensive line is a team strength, with five others returning with starting experience, including defensive end Charles Harris, who has topped several preseason award watch lists following a breakout sophomore season.New defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross believes the depth of the defensive line will fill the void of the loss of Brady and Brantley. Its hard to replace that kind of talent with one guy, but weve just got to do it by committee, Cross said. Its just an opportunity for those guys to step into a starting role, and were going to let them battle it out and see who comes out on top.ddddddddddddOdom also announced Thursday that offensive lineman Nate Crawford is no longer with the team, citing medical reasons.Nate went through a couple of different back procedures...he had made some progress, but to get back and for him, long term, its best that hes medically retired.Crawford, a junior, made eight starts in 2015, making him the most experienced returning lineman.Offensive coordinator Josh Heupel said the team was preparing for this decision. The writing on the wall as the summer came on. Its not something that happened here the first day of training camp. Weve counted on that here, and weve got some good young guys in our program that are going to have to develop quickly to give us the depth that youre obviously going to need in this conference.Additionally, Odom confirmed that defensive lineman Terry Beckner Jr. is in full pads for practice after a torn ACL and MCL cut his freshman season short. He had 8 1/2 tackles-for-loss, three sacks and a fumble recovery in 10 games.Contrary to recent years, no team captains were announced the first day. Were going to do that a little bit different than maybe has been done here, Odom said. I want to see how our leadership continues to develop over the next few weeks. I expect a great team full of leaders. ' ' '
