TROON, Scotland -- Perks come with being a major winner, as Danny Willett is discovering.Take last week, for example. The Masters champion started it in the Royal Box at Wimbledon watching Andy Murray and Roger Federer play, and ended it as a special guest at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. On Monday of British Open week, Willett was shooting penalty kicks at a soccer stadium near Royal Troon. Now its time for Willett to focus on his day job.Since his win at Augusta National in April, Willett has played five events and had one top-10 finish -- a third place at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. He has missed the cut in his last two tournaments, the BMW International Open in Germany and the French Open. Two days before the British Open, Willett said he has had a brutally honest conversation with himself as he looks to rediscover his form. You got to go back to basics and realize what got you there in the first place, Willett said. Are you working out enough? Have you been putting enough time in? Have you been dedicating yourself properly? Weve had a couple moments in the last month or so where were trying to get back on track now, getting back up and working as hard and for longer hours than what we have done in previous months, previous years. Not that he regrets getting out of the golf bubble from time to time, as he did Monday when he attended a promotional event that involved taking penalties and hitting balls from the stands at Ibrox -- the home of Scottish soccer club Rangers.Willett particularly enjoys mixing with other sports stars, finding out what makes them tick and how they handle competing at the top of their profession.Being in that environment, I think it puts a different spin on our sport and what we do and how hard we work, Willett said. We get caught up in our own little bubbles at time. As golfers we travel the world and play week to week, traveling together, and very rarely do you get to see other people around in their working environment.A former top-ranked amateur, Willett was always destined for the top in golf and he had his first real taste of going close at a major at the British Open last year at St. Andrews. Willett was second after two rounds after shooting 66 and 69 and then played the final round with Zach Johnson, who went on to lift the claret jug after a playoff. It was good to be able to see that first-hand and see how he handled the pressure, Willett said. Just seeing how it unfolded and how he played was good for me and a learning experience.Willett took that experience to Augusta this year, holding himself together after Jordan Spieth hit two balls into the water at No. 12 to become an unlikely winner of the Masters. Now he finds himself at the center of attention wherever he goes and the crowds are sure to be following him at Troon. The 28-year-old Englishman said he spent two or three days in bed last week because of illness, but will be 100 percent by the first round Thursday.Being British, Willett said, this is one you want to get your hands on. Martinez was playing reasonably shallow in right field, willing to risk a ball hit over his head. That decision paid off when Travis dArnaud poked a single right to him.Martinez threw Jay Bruce out at the plate on the final play of the game, enabling the Detroit Tigers to hold on for a pulsating 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night. Bruce was trying to score from second on dArnauds hit, and Martinez was ready.I was kind of in a way anticipating it a little bit, Martinez said. I wasnt confident that he was really going to drive something over my head, so I kind of just shaded in a little bit more than perhaps they say you should.New York trailed 6-1 before rallying with two runs each in the fifth and seventh, and with men on first and second and two out in the ninth, dArnaud hit a single to right. Martinez charged the ball, and his one-hop throw home was in time to get Bruce.Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs for the Tigers, who have won 10 of 11 and trail AL Central-leading Cleveland by two games.Detroits Matt Boyd (3-2) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, and New Yorks Logan Verrett (3-7) yielded six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.Martinezs throw gave Francisco Rodriguez his 32nd save in 34 chances.J.D. picked me up big time, Rodriguez said. I guess when everythings going well, you catch those types of breaks.Bruce and Curtis Granderson homered for the Mets, but New York went 2 of 12 with men in scoring position -- and one of the hits was dArnauds on the last play of the game. Its really tough to lose this one, because we had so many good at-bats in the last few innings, and we just couldnt get the one big hit, Mets manager Terry Collins said. Then, when we finally get one, J.D. Martinez makes a great throw and we dont get anything out of it.After Bruces fourth-inning homer tied the game at 1, the Tigers answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run single, and Ian Kinsler drove in another run with a single. Cabreras two-run single gave Detroit aa five-run lead.ddddddddddddIt was 6-3 in the seventh when Bruce came up with men on first and second and nobody out. Cabrera fielded his grounder and threw toward second, but the ball hit runner Neil Walker in the head and bounced toward center field. A run came home, and the Mets scored another when Wilmer Flores hit a grounder to third that Mike Aviles misplayed for an error. With men on first and second and still nobody out, dArnaud grounded into a double play, and Detroit was able to get out of the inning up 6-5.The Mets also hit into double plays in the sixth and the eighth.ROSTER MOVESThe Tigers could celebrate the win, but they announced afterward that RHP Jordan Zimmermann and 3B Nick Castellanos were headed to the DL. Castellanos left Saturdays game with a non-displaced fracture of his left hand. He was hit by a pitch during Detroits big fourth inning.Probably a minimum of four weeks, manager Brad Ausmus said. Certainly not good news for us. The important thing is for him to get healthy. Were looking really some point in early September that wed get him back. The Tigers will call up INF Casey McGehee and LHP Kyle Ryan. LHP Daniel Norris will eventually take Zimmermanns spot in the rotation.CONCESSIONThe Mets had nothing to lose by challenging the final play at the plate, but they were satisfied that Bruce was indeed out and didnt ask for a review. Our guys said he was out on the replay, so we didnt bother, Collins said. Maybe thats a play that you challenge no matter what, because the worst that can happen is you still lose the game.TRAINERS ROOMMets: RHP Zack Wheeler (Tommy John surgery) pitched an inning in his first rehab start with Class A St. Lucie.UP NEXTMets: RHP Jacob deGrom (7-5) takes the mound Sunday as New York tries to avoid a three-game sweep.Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (6-11) starts for Detroit in the finale of this nine-game homestand.---Follow Noah Trister at www.Twitter.com/noahtrister ' ' '
